Well it has been just over a month since the AGM so I thought it would be appropriate to write a few words on what has happened over that period.

For those Members that were at the AGM they would be aware of the new Committee for those that weren’t the new Committee is:

Jill Barker, Jenny Edmanson, Phil Stephens (last year’s committee), with new elected members Joy Francis, Angela Royal, Rob Stiglbauer, Cameron Place and Ian Loughlin, and yours truly as Captain.

It is great to see new members on the Committee having a go and for those that missed out there is always next year.

Most members would know Ian and Rob. Rob has been a member for some years and Ian works behind the bar at the club.

Cameron Place is the loans Manager at Bendigo Community Bank at Drysdale and Portarlington. Cameron is also involved with the South Western Golf Association as Treasurer.

Joy and Angela have both been members of the club for over 10 years with Angela spending many years on the women’s golf committee and as the women’s handicapper.

At the Committee’s first meeting the Committee voted Jill Barker as Vice Captain. Jill is very passionate about golf and a terrific worker for the Golf Club. Most members would know Jill from the Pro Shop.

One issue the Committee discussed and feel strongly about is hitting down the wrong fairways on 9 and 11. It was agreed that we should put signs up on the fences requesting members not to hit down the wrong hole as this is a dangerous practice.  The ground staff will erect the signs when they are made up. Obviously, we cannot stop this being done by a bad shot.

The Committee also feels that there is some inconsistency with the course set up, i.e. Penalty Areas on the 2nd/3rd holes and the 18th hole.

On the golfing front Gary Thompson and myself attended a two day Rules course at Ballarat Golf Club. The two days were very intense and full on. We spent one full day on the theory, half a day on the course and half a day back in the class room. One thing I would recommend to members if you have a smart phone and or tablet there is a great app the R&A Rules of Golf which includes a quiz section that you can test yourself on the rules.

Gary and I will work with the Committee to use our new found knowledge and try to improve set up of the course.

The Monday morning volunteers do a great job and members would have noticed that the second hole penalty area has had the long grass cut. Apart from going around with the grass cutters they do a raft of other projects which assist the full time ground staff.

The South Western Golf Association held its AGM on Tuesday November 27 and Angela Royal and myself attended the meeting. I will include extracts from the meeting in my next report.

Reflecting back, it has been a wicked month weather wise with strong winds and rain, but under the circumstances the course is magnificent.

Don’t forget to get your name down for the men’s Christmas break up on Tuesday 10 and the women’s Christmas break up on Wednesday 11 December.  If you have any dietary requirements, please advise reception prior to the day.

Yours truly

Alan Sweeney
