Hole #1
Nice short par to commence your round. The hole meanders slightly to the left and up the hill to the green. A bunker on the right hand side of the fairway will catch any loose drives to the right. 2 large bunkers protect the left and right hand side of the green. So ensure you take enough club to clear the front traps. Quite a large green from front to back.
Hole #2
The hardest par 3 on the course (if not the hardest hole on the course). A long iron for the big hitter is required and if a head wind possibly a 3 wood or driver. The green has severe slope from right to left and the green has a bunker short right and on the left side of the green. Putting is difficult on the green.
Hole #3
Good par 4 (par 5 for ladies) with the landing area for the longer drive narrowing up (be careful of the large tree down the left at about 230 metres), the ball seems to bounce towards it. Second shot is to a slightly elevated green with the only bunker being about 15 metres short of the putting surface on the right. Look at the pin position when you walk off the 1st green as you will not be able to see the bottom of the flag from your second shot. Good chance for a birdie for the ladies on this short par 5.
Hole #4
Straight away par 4 with the only trouble being OOB down the right hand side. Wide open fairway so let the ‘big dog rip'. Second shot is to a long narrow green with a cavernous bunker to the left and a slope off to the right. Good birdie chance for the low handicapper.
Hole #5
Recently constructed par 3 with a large sloping green and a deep bunker on the left and a small pot bunker short right. Green is a little firmer than the others due to it being new. If the pin is cut back left, play for the centre of the green as the left bunker can be difficult to get up and down from.
Hole #6
Par 5 which has recently had an extra 15 metres in length added to it. A straight hole with the only trouble off the tee being OOB all down the right hand side. If you are in range to hit the green in two, make sure you take enough club to carry the front left hand bunker as this will catch any wayward or short shot into the green. If you attempt to run the ball on to the green you will have to thread the two bunkers at the front of the green. A good birdie chance for the long hitter.
Hole #7
Straight away par 4 that plays slightly uphill to the green. Avoid hitting the tee shot to the right as this may block out your second shot to a large green. A bunker on either side of the green will catch any wayward second shot. The green is quite long and slopes severely from front to back.
Hole #8
Excellent birdie opportunity for the low handicapper and long hitter. Short par 4 with wide fairway with only trouble being the greenside bunker just short of the putting surface. For the long hitter, avoid this bunker and there is a chance of driving this kidney shaped green. A deep bunker on the right can also catch the unwary player. This green is fairly flat so a good chance for a par or birdie.
Hole #9
This short par 5 is an expected birdie hole and there will be plenty of eagles. If you negotiate hitting through the of pine trees off the tee, the fairway is quite wide and bends to the left. The long hitter will only be left with anything from a 5 iron to 9 iron depending on the wind. Don't venture too far left otherwise the trees will block out your second or third shot. This green is fairly new so it is a bit firmer than the others. Be careful not to overshoot the green as the ball could go out of bounds behind the green.
Hole #10
Probably the best hole on the course. Classic par 4 where you hit your tee shot up the hill where a fairway bunker on the right hand side will catch any loose tee shot. If you hit driver you need to skirt the left edge of the bunker otherwise you will block your second shot out by trees. Once in the fairway on top of the hill, you peer down the hill to a large green protected by a bunker on the right hand side while a tall gum tree sits short of the green and covers the left half of the green. Putting can be difficult on this green due to severe slope and the speed of the green.
Hole #11
Another Par 5 which doglegs sharply from right to left alongside the 9th hole. For the shorter hitter a straight drive to the corner will leave a straight shot towards the green. The long hitter will be able to hit a high hook over the corner, (hook it more than you think otherwise you will run through the fairway into the trees). The second shot is fairly simple to a small sloping green and like the 9th green don't go long as OOB awaits or a difficult lob shot required to get to the flag.
Hole #12
This short par 4 is a birdie chance for most players. OOB guards the left hand side of the fairway and pine trees down the right. A tee shot favouring the left middle of the fairway will be ideal to allow you a short pitch to a relatively flat green with a bunker on the left side. The bigger hitter will have a chance to drive the green.
Hole #13
Definite birdie hole. This short hole can be driven with a fairway wood or hybrid by the long hitters. OOB looms down the left hand side of the fairway. Two greenside bunkers cover the front left and right hand side of the green which is quite narrow at the front so a precise tee shot to the right side of the fairway is required to find the putting surface. Once on the green, some subtle breaks need to be negotiated but a birdie or par is expected.
Hole #14
Rated as the most difficult hole on the course for the men and is a par 5 for the ladies. This hole is gun barrel straight with OOB all down the left hand side of the fairway with large pine trees protruding out onto the left. A drive down the middle will leave you a long second shot to very flat green guarded by a bunker short right. When the wind is blowing into your face you may not be able to reach the green in two. Par is a good score here.
Hole #15
This hole is rated as the second most difficult, with a sweeping dogleg to the right with a large water hazard down the left and fairway bunkers to the right. An ideal drive is to skirt the edge of the fairway bunkers but if you hit your drive too long and straight you will find the watery grave, as the fairway slopes in that direction. Once finding the fairway you will be faced with a difficult second shot to a green which has two large bunkers protecting the right and left hand side of the green. This green is new so it can be difficult to stop the ball on it. This hole is greatly affected by the wind so club selection is crucial.
Hole #16
Short par 4 with a water hazard to the left and fairway bunkers down the right. A drive positioned to the left of the bunkers (long hitters will be able to carry them) will leave you a short iron to a large green. Like the 15th, this green is new so allow for some roll with your second shot. Avoid the green side bunkers as they are quite deep and can be difficult to get out of.
Hole #17
This hole is Portarlington Golf Clubs' signature hole. A Par 3 that requires a water carry of about 120 metres to green that sits right to left with a significant amount of slope. The tee shot is played in amongst the pine trees and these shield the wind so ensure you pick the correct direction of the wind. The green is guarded by 3 bunkers and a right to left tee shot is ideal so you can use the slope of the green to get close to the flag. Putting can very difficult depending on the hole location and it is not uncommon to see the ball roll off the green. Par is a good score.
Hole #18
The final hole and a good birdie chance to finish off your round. This hole bends left to right and the fairway is quite generous. A drive too straight can run out of fairway then you will have to negotiate the trees to get to the green. Once on the fairway the second shot will require another water carry to get to the green. There is water hazard along the front and right hand side of the green, so any shot to the right will find a watery end. This hazard will also catch any tee shots by the longer hitter who tries to take the green on. A large generous green which has subtle breaks but a good chance to make a putt.
